Basecamp Tool

1 April 2008, 07:13 by Chad Reynoldson

Reynoldson Control is rolling out a new project management strategy using Basecamp. This web application will allow us to communicate more effectively and will provide greater collaboration during the development process.

When you receive an invitation email to join a project, you will be given a link. That will bring you to our project within basecamp. This will be our primary means of communication on the project.

There will be several tabs along the top (Overview, Messages, To-Do, Milestones, Writeboard, Files). We may not use all of these basecamp features for every project, but we will use messages, to-do, milestones, and files for sure.

The messages tab is where most of our collaboration will occur. Any message that is created in basecamp can be emailed to persons assigned to the project. This email alerts everyone of activity and anyone on the email list can comment on the message. This is the beginning of the collaboration process.

The to-do tab is where tasks are assigned. This will clearly identify tasks that need to be done and who’s responsible for the task.

A milestone is a calendar reference of when something is due. There will always be at least 1 milestone, project completion. Other milestones may include: choose GUI template, deliver a/v drawings, provide completed DSP file.

A writeboard is a web-based text document. I will create read-only writeboards to describe procedures, work-flow, etc. We also may create collaborative writeboards that discuss functionality, a/v design, etc.

Finally the files tab will hold all files related to the project. This will also allow us to group multiple versions of the same file, all grouped together. Files can be attached to messages or comments and can be as large as 30M in size.

I hope you will join me in my enthusiasm of using this new project management tool. I believe it will help us all to achieve our goals in a more collaborative environment.
