The move home

18 November 2005, 20:00 by Chad Reynoldson

The move from Texas to Nebraska went as planned. We closed on the house in Texas on Tuesday morning and immediately headed north.

We stopped for gas in Oklahoma and we thought the cat made an escape. The wind was blowing and it was very cold and it made things difficult. Luckily he crawled into the back of the van, so we didn’t have to abandon him and turn him into a Sooner.

We reached Lincoln around 10pm with 2” of snow on the ground and some icy road conditions (Welcome home). We saw a jack-knifed tractor-trailor in the median, several cars and trucks in the ditch, and even a car on the opposite side of traffic turned backwards. We had a pre-paid cell phone and we were roaming, which made it difficult to enter the 30 or so digits to call Jane in the van, but she knew it was difficult travel. Jane’s cousin Brian was kind enough to let us invade: mom, dad, daughter #1, daughter #2, grandma, dog, cat, and two cars full of stuff.

The next day we all woke up sick with colds. We had to take our 2 year old daughter to the doctor with double ear infection. She had a miserable trip, but she is now on the mends. Needless to say, we wanted to get so much done this day, but got nothing accomplished other than walk through our new house.

Thursday we closed on the house in Nebraska and got the keys. My plans to drink beer in the living room from a lawn chair was foiled because my cold got much worse. We spent the afternoon in the house and went back to Brians that evening. Things started feeling a little strange about then as we drove back through town. We realized that this time we don’t have to leave, this is our new home.

Friday the truck arrived with all of our stuff. Our Driver, Darryl, was from Austin,TX and he wasn’t liking the cold. They quickly unloaded our 12,000lb of stuff and were done by 2pm.

Now the unboxing and organizing. Luckily we had help with Jane’s mom Bette and my mom and dad. My dad and I worked on getting the home office up and running. We had to pull telephone and catv wire and add an electrical outlet. My office is the entire basement (unfinished), but I do love the privacy.

Too long winded, but I can get that way. Hope you enjoy this.

Peace,
Chad
